How is the transformation process in the Cabanyal neighbourhood in Valencia made visible in its spatial and social overlaps with the help of the camera?

The old fishermen's quarter has been severely neglected since 2001 due to the planned construction of a large road connecting the city centre directly to the sea. Since the failure of these plans, the infrastructure has been renovated and the properties bought up and developed by private investors. This has resulted in both structural and social changes. The aim of the film is to make the spatial and social overlaps between the new and old residents visible.

Using the possibility of preserving time through the medium of film, we analyse urban development in terms of the communication between architecture and people. By recording selected situations in image and sound, the aim is to capture the moods of communal life, i.e. the appropriation of architecture and urban space, within the changing neighbourhood. It will show which different groups live there side by side and how this is reflected in the different ways in which the architecture is treated. How do the buildings react to the different people and what traces do they leave behind? How is the public space used and what are the points of contact between the different groups?

In order to create as direct and authentic an impression as possible, we leave the images and sound as unedited and unchanged as possible. The camera takes the perspective of an outside observer. In terms of film, we follow the rules of the Dogma 95 Manifesto (1995) by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg in order to create a direct and unadulterated image.
